柏林自由大学（德文：Freie Universität Berlin）创建于1948年，前身为柏林大学，主校址位于柏林Dahlem，是德国首都规模较大的文理科综合性大学，也是欧洲大陆高校之一，德国精英大学、U15大学联盟、同一个欧洲大学联盟、欧洲大学协会、欧洲首都大学联盟成员。

冷战期间，位于菩提树下大街的原柏林大学划归东柏林，受以苏联为首的社会主义阵营管治。为了追求学术自由，原柏林大学的以人文社会科学为主的绝大师生出走，在美英法等西方阵营的支持下在西柏林成立了"自由的柏林大学"，即今柏林自由大学，到了五十年代以其人文社科研究蜚声欧美，成为西德学术重镇。

“真理、公平、自由”是1948年柏林自由大学建校时的校训。在其相对较短的建校史中，诞生了7位诺贝尔奖得主，18位莱布尼茨奖得主，15位德国科学院院士，着名物理学家张首晟也是毕业此校。
